Brakes - cost?
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:14:34 AM »
Hi all, finally back on here after a trip to the desert.

When I had my Caliber serviced at 18k the dealer (Cardiff) stated that my brakes may need doing after a couple of k and said he'd call in a month or two. Well time passed etc and on taking in the vehicle for the 27k I asked the dealer (Cribbs Bristol) to check the brakes and they responded with nothing wrong, looking good!?

Anyhow I'm on 31k now and this morning when braking, the horrible scraping noise is happening so I am assuming that they need doing, can anyone tell me what price / where etc to get the best deal? I'm about to call the local dealer but wondered if anyone knew a better place (kwikfit etc??)

My local garage charge me £166.50 inc VAT and fitting for 2 front brake discs and pads. I wouldn't try kwik fit as they will either tell you to go to the main dealer as they do not stock the parts, or they will just look at you in a state of confusion asking "you want brakes for what?"

Had rear discs and pads replaced not that long ago. There is other work on the invoice, but it looks like the cost was £130 plus labour (assume about an hour) plus VAT.

Cant find the invoice for the front ones just now, will let you know if I can find it.

For the front discs, pads and 2 tyres, it was £323, same local garage that did the work on the rear.

I'd definately suggest checking a local repairer for prices rather than paying dealer prices.

My recent service said that by next service i will need new front discs and pads all round (don't think he said back discs too).

Are people just going with stock Dodge parts or can better pads and discs be found elsewhere, like on ebay? What would they be called? Are they cheaper AND better?

At the risk of stating the obvious, get the dealer to check if the discs are warped (mine did, and I'm not alone - there's a thread somewhere in here all about it). If they are, you may be able to get them replaced under warranty.

I not been in for a while However here are the Bristol (cribbs) main dealer costs for Breaks etc:

Front pads:      ?125.43
Front Disc's:      ?173.29
Rear pads:       ?98.11
Rear disc's:       ?141.28

I had my mot/service in Aug 09 and I was told that I had about 5-6000 miles until I needed to get the brakes replaced. In Aug I did shop around and ask about brakes and kikfit would only do the front ones.

Does Anyway have any recommendations in the Bristol area as i will need to get them looked out soon.  :help:

PS Next main dealer service will be ?222. Can any boy lend me ?750.  :smash

I go my rear brakes done just before I traded the car in.

Rear discs were ?54.50 (pair)
Rear pads were ?72.22 (pair)

Labour was also charged, but as there was a lot of suspension work carried out at the same time, I don't think much applied to the brakes. Seems like the dealer you went to is taking the P a bit!!!!!

Mine were supplied and fitted by a small local repair centre. Sorry, don't know of any in the bristol area but I would suspect other small repair centre's should be able to do it for cheaper than your dealer.

It might be worth contacting these guys for parts...

http://www.usautomotive.co.uk/default.asp

We used to use them for our cars sales dept if they needed something on a CDJ car. For example I remeber the sales dept sold a Jeep Wrangler that needed a new radiator. CJ price was about ?300 and I think we got one from USAutomotive for less than ?100.

Alternativly you could try these people....
