Am I right in thinking although it says CRD on the back of the car, it isn't?

Yes you're right it's got CRD on the back of the diesel Calibers, but it's not a common rail diesel, , but VW's take on the common rail.
I think it uses a pump for each cylinder not a high pressure fuel bar (rail) like on CRD's.
I'm sure someone will let me know if I got that wrong.
The new VW's still use the 1968cc engine, but with a new injection system that is a proper common rail as invented by Fiat.

I remember when these first came out.  The CRD was the badge on the back that let you know you was buying the better car.

This was when they worked out how to inject the fuel in under an extremely high pressure, giving a finer mist, a better burn and therefore using less fuel.  The Common Rail referred to was I guess in the early days anyway, a fuel rail under high pressure, from which all the injectors were fed.

These days I believe most diesels have 2 fuel pumps, a low pressure one to feed the high pressure pump.  I don't think the CRD has changed as such, tho there may well not be a big shiney metal fuel bar anymore, you could have a 'fuel rail' as such built into the pump, but in essence its the same thing.

Mind you, I'm still thinking CRD could be Crude Rattley Diesel...  :-)

I have the Avenger and work for VOLKSWAGEN so nice cheap parts for the engine, however is ther a vw engine code anyone knows of (i.e AAC ABD etc) as the ones dodge have printed on the block dont work and its not easy to tell apart from the many different types on our systems? :help:

Thank you

Volkswagen Engine Code
« Reply #6 on: April 26, 2010, 08:39:02 PM »
Here is the answer you might have been looking for, i know i was.

If you own a Dodge/Chrysler Diesel with the engine code "ECD" then your Volkswagen Engine code is "BKD" - this is the engine used in the MK5 Golf GT TDI 140bhp.

Transmission code should be "KDN" if Dodge havn't used there own gearbox which is unlikely but when i confirm i will let you know

The good news is, now you can go to your Dodge dealer for engine parts or Volkswagen or even Factors like Euro Car Parts and Camberley Auto Factors etc

I work at volkswagen and have had numerous mechanix check this info, hould be correct.

Happy Motoring.

I would imagine you can also use the factors 'German Sweedish and French' too. They are a reasonably priced bunch.
