Parking Sensor Fault..... Maybe?
« on: February 08, 2010, 10:20:45 PM »
Looking for any advice peeps got. Last few days my parking sensors have been playing silly buggers.
Cali is about just over a year old, never had any issues with the parking sensors worked perfectly the whole time, anyway on saturday went out in the car, reversed out of the driver way. No issues, single beep when selecting reverse and then usually pips getting quicker as i approached things. Drove for about 30 minutes then went to reverse the car and this time instead of the usual single beep i just got a constant very loud BEEP BEEP BEEP and this continued until i took the car out of gear. Anyway left the car for a few hours and when i came back to it i just popped it in to reverse to see what would happen. Back to normal, single beep and then the usual pips to show detection. So i drove home thinking maybe its ok now. However when i got home and went to reverse the car again, back to the very loud constant beeps again.
Annoying thing is i went to drive the car again today, went to reverse out of my drive to go to work and once again single beep everything working perfectly. No reversing when i got to work. However i had to reverse out when i left work. Once again this was fine single beep and system work fine, but got home and had to reverse to turn round and again LOUD constant beeping.  :bigcry:

Anyway so far it seems to be that from cold the system works fine but after a little bit of driving it goes weird and then if left alone for a while it settles down again. Just don't know what to make of it. I assume the beeping is the systems way of saying something is wrong but i cannot understand why it keeps going from good to bad.............. any ideas would be most appreciated

A  few questions i am afraid Coops dear chap..

1) is it a Mopar/Dodge item, ie "Park pilot",
2) (if yes to (1) then did it come with the little L.E.D. display in the rear of the car, or not!!
3) was it pre-fitted to the vehicle when you bought it! or did you have it fitted when you bought your Cally??

Ummm in answer to all those questions.

It was fitted by the dealer when i bought the car from new. Pre-fitted i would say not by factory, it was dealer fitted accessory that i picked from the dodge accessory guide so i would say it was the proper one but all fitted before i took delivery of the car
I have no little LED Display that i am aware of, or certainly nothing on show.

I also have the Dodge one (without the lights).  The only time I get any problems, is when one of the sensors has a problem, like mud or ice over it.  Once this is removed, or falls off, all is well.

If your Cali is still under warranty, whip it back and get it sorted :)

Are the accessories covered for the same amount of time as the car or is the warranty different??

If you get accesories fitted to the car before you take delivery when the car is new then you get 3 years warranty.
Accesories fitted after you take the car (even 1 day later) just have 1 year.

I thought i would take the rear bumper off and just take a quick look to see if there was anything obvious that might be causing my issue with the parking sensors. Straight away i found what potential could be the problem and explain the intermittant nature of the fault. One of the rubber covers that fits over the back of the sensor and covers the cable connection was not on properly. So i looked at it closely and the connection was very oxidized. The other 3 were very clean and shiney. So maybe i am thinking this one because of the oxidization its making bad contact so sometimes works ok other times does not.
Anyway i cleaned up the contacts, connected it all back up and at the same time tidy up the wiring for the system behind the bumper ( not very impressed with how dodge had done it, very messy and masking tape all over the show tut tut) Anyway hopefully that has cured the problem so after a few days of testing i'll let you know. If not its off to dodge it goes!

the rear sensor kit, if provided by dodge (labelled as "PARK PILOT")  comes complete with sticky pad mounted cable tie holders, and cable ties, etc etc.... so me is thinking your dealers fitter can not be assed... lazy scrote!!!!

mention this point to your dealer, i would....

indeed that was my thought when i saw it. Needless to say it is now much better.

Also ( touch wood ) so far so good. Driven twice today and both times reverse sensors operated correctly.
