2 Problems? Headlight & Cruise Control
« on: February 14, 2010, 05:10:12 PM »
About a year ago the cruise control stopped working on my 06 2.0SXT (UK car).
Also the track advance buttons on the steering wheel started to play up refusing to advance or go back to previous track or doing the opposite of what you expected them to do. I think it may be the steering controls connection/slip ring. Any advance on that? Or advice as to anything else to look for.

OK prob 2;

Went out to the car just before Xmas, realised the dipped beam was not working on the nearside/passanger side, gave the headlight unit a thump with my hand and, et voila, it came on. Thought nowt more and carried on driving, two days later realised it wasn't working again. So bought bulbs, went to garage they changed bulb and that made no difference, in fact they tried three different bulbs and none worked. Even trying the bulb from the drivers side. Main beam works, the side light works, just the dipped beam refuses to work.
Any ideas?

Is it connected to the 1st problem I outline with the cruise and track/ channel change buttons?

Car is well out of warranty. So if it needs a look at anyone got a suggestion o9f someone in the Surrey/Hants/West Sussex borders who could fix this?

Any help greatfully received, many thanks.

The Cruise control / Audio controls issues I had, ended up with a brand new steering wheel, sorry!  While we had this issue had no light problems.

The dipped beam sound like a loose connection to me
www.wheelfittingsolutions.co.uk , alloy wheel accessories, nuts bolts locks etc

I had a similar problem as your first problem. The cruise control just switched itself off whilst driving. I didn't have to have a new steering wheel but did have a new clock spring. Several others have had their's replaced too.
Three strikes and you're out.

CL is spot on, all your steering wheel issues should be fixed with a new clock spring.

The headlight circuit is controlled by the computer, and, if it thinks there is a problem with the circuit, it won't turn that circuit on.  However, and fault will be logged, but the headlight circuit from the brain to headlight isnt huge, and will be an easy one to check out for potential faults.

Hope this helps  :yes:

Thanks all for your replies.

(Update)
Put key in ignition, dipped beam and side lights on.
Using a multimeter we got 11v on the dipped beam, 11v on the high beam, continuity on the earth.
Ran 2 seperate wires to the bulb to each of the terminals and the bulb works both high and low.
Plugged in bulb, ran a seperate earth wire to the earth terminal but the bulb did not illuminate (just trying to eliminate an obvious earth fault)
Still got 11V on both high and low beams. Slightly confused by that as the voltage was present independent of switch position.
Would have tested the other side but getting in to the back of the bulb wasn't possible in the time we had.
Q;
Is the 11v a "test" voltage that the system sends to the lamps to test continuity and if it doesn't find it doesn't send the full 12V to the bulb. Which is the only thing I can think of right now. But totally confused why the 11V doesn't make the bulb come on even if it is only dim.

So any answers? Suggestions? (apart from go to the dealer we don't have one conveniently close)

The clock spring/steering wheel connector is the most logical for the other problems from reading this forum and these answers. Many thanks for that chaps n chapesses.

The modern multi meters can read a 'floating' voltage, that isnt really there.

IE. if you connect the bulb into the circuit, and then measure the voltage, (stick a pin into the wire), you will find i think, there is in fact no voltage, or else the bulb would light.

The can bus wolfy has nothing to do with the actual circuit for the lights, it is just used to control things.

If you are nearby to somewhere i frequent, id be happy to help  :yes:

Hi guys hope all is well?
I have the exact same problem with the headlight dipped beam not working changed two bulbs with no joy, and there is only 12V going to the full beam?
Because the old bulb has blown do I need to get the fault cleared for it to supply 12V to dipped or is it a loose connection somewhere I'm lost on this one?
Cheers
Jay

Update dealers have siad the only cure on a simular issue was to change out the whole fuse Box :rolleyes:
